Summer is fast approaching with the weather beginning to turn, and while we might not ever quite reach sandals weather here in Glasgow, it’s time to put away those woolly jumpers and puffer jackets in favour of something a little lighter.
While shorts and t-shirts might fit comfortably in the back of your wardrobe, it’s easy to forget just how much space winter clothes can take up.
Maybe you live in student accommodation, or maybe you and your family have a spare room or garage already filled with boxes. Either way, space management can be a daunting task, but of course, we’re here to help.
So, to help, we’ve detailed a few handy hints and tips to make the most out of your storage and maximise your space to help give you a stress-free summer!
1. Use empty suitcases
Chances are you probably have a few empty suitcases and luggage bags dotted around your house in preparation for your next holiday.
If you’re not planning to use them in the immediate future, filling your bulky, empty suitcases with excess clothing and accessories can be a great way to make use of existing space while keeping things neatly organised and tidied together.
Depending on how thick the material is, you can also roll up items of clothing instead of folding them to maximise space and minimise creasing.
2. Vacuum-pack big bulky items
When it comes to storing larger items like puffer jackets and padded coats, suitcases might not provide you with enough space, that is, unless you ‘shrink’ the clothes themselves!
By using vacuum-sealed storage bags, you can further maximise space by taking the bulk out of these items, using less storage space and protecting your coats in preparation for another winter.
Why not try this with other cosy winter items like blankets, dressing gowns, or even teddy bears and other plushies?
3. Hang scarves instead of folding them
Using a cheap towel rack will act as a great scarf organiser. You can either secure this to the back of your door or hang it in your wardrobe for a great space-saving hack!
If you live in rented accommodation and can’t alter your room, another option could be to store them in your wardrobe on the same rack as pairs of trousers, or smart clothing that only gets used every once in a while.
4. Turn wine boxes into shoe storage
While there’s nothing better for winter weather than a solid pair of boots, they can be rather intrusive when the weather starts to brighten up. If you need help storing them, this idea is a corker!
It might seem a little left field, but the cardboard sleeves inside wine boxes actually make them perfect for shoe and boot storage.
If you have particularly wide shoes, you can bend or remove the cardboard slots for more room. While wine is our preferred choice, any cardboard box will do.
Whether it’s been originally used for electrical appliances, foodstuffs, or even other shoes, holding onto boxes might seem counterintuitive, but it can be a great stackable alternative that can prevent an unsightly buildup of seasonable footwear.
5. Use self-storage units
