We humans are fond of moving house. In fact, we enjoy it so much, that we do it eight times on average in our lifetime!
However, in spite of this fact, it’s common to hear people say that moving house is one of the most stressful events of their life. Whilst there are some aspects of moving that you can’t control, choosing the right removal company is something you definitely can.
Here’s some tips, outlining how to steer clear of cowboy removal men.
Dodgy Removal Companies – What to Look Out for
They don’t have any reviews.
Before you select a removal company, get online and check out their reviews. A well-established business should have quite a few – and if they’re any good, their reviews will be complimentary. If a company has no reviews at all, approach with caution. If their reviews stink – avoid at all costs.
They’re not willing to provide testimonials.
Give the removal company a ring and ask them if they’re happy to provide you with testimonials. A decent removal business will have a selection of testimonials to hand, and will be happy to pass them on. If they’re reluctant to do so, this should set alarm bells ringing.
They haven’t got a solid local presence.
The good removal companies are often the ones you’ll frequently see out and about on jobs – and you’ll know it’s them because of their bright, branded vehicle! If the removal firm is operating from a non-branded van, this suggests they’re an amateur outfit – and thus not to be trusted with your precious items.
Customer service.
When you call them, how do they conduct themselves on the phone? Are they approachable, informative and happy to talk to you? Or do they sound… well, a little bit shifty? Go with your gut instinct. If your Spiderman senses are tingling and you don’t trust them, don’t choose to use their services!
Suspiciously low prices.
Now, everyone loves a bargain, and it makes sense to shop around for a good price. However, if you get a quote that’s a lot cheaper than other firms, be suspicious. Removal companies charge a certain amount for a reason – because it’s a lot of work to move your belongings from A to B! If they’re charging a ridiculously low sum, this suggests they’re inexperienced or worse, con-artists.
They’re going it alone.
Unless you live in a garden shed, it’s likely you’ll need more than one removal man. Ask how many members of staff will be assisting with your move, and make sure it’s an appropriate amount of manpower for the job. Hiring one man to shift an entire house-worth of items is not a sensible idea.
They’re unreliable.
Do they take ages to get back to you after you’ve left a message? When you drive past their offices, are they always locked and the curtains drawn? When they say they’ll call you back at 10am, do they actually call in the evening instead? If they’re unreliable before they secure your business, what are they going to be like on the day of the move? Yikes…
