At GTW Storage, we love nothing more than helping ease the burden of too much stuff. Whether you’re moving house or just trying to be a little less sentimental, conceding that you might need some support is the first step!
So, how can we help? Below are some of the top items we see in self-storage every day. Take a look, get inspired, and learn how we can meet your needs!
Items you’re allowed to put in storage units
1. Furniture
Storing your furniture can be helpful on several occasions. Whether you’re moving house, need a temporary storage space, or are looking to downsize and wait to sell your excess pieces, self-storage is an ideal solution.
Whether it’s sofas, beds, tables, desks, or even mirrors, items like this are best stored around the edges of your room to maximise safety and visibility!
2. Kitchen Appliances
Moving from the living room to the kitchen; appliances, pots, pans, and even dry goods are all welcome in a self-storage space. However, to prevent mould and bacteria from building up, ensure that all appliances are clean and dry goods are airtight.
3. Clothing and bedroom items
Now, to the bedroom!
Wardrobes are among the most cumbersome items to move home with, and you might also realise that half the items in your wardrobe no longer fit your current style.
Suppose you’re not quite ready to decide what should stay and what should go. In that case, self-storage is an excellent go-between solution, allowing you to cull any undesirable items before they go on eBay or to a charity shop.
If you run an online clothing business, self-storage is also a great and cost effective way to keep your unsold inventory safe and out the way.
4. Office Equipment
Speaking of businesses, self-storage can be used not only as a stock room but also to store documents, hard drives, furniture, stationery and other office equipment.
Whether you’re downsizing or scaling up your operations, leases don’t always align, so having a space to store these items in the interim period can be handy.
While we’re more than happy to give you unlimited access to your items, it’s important to remember that you can’t use storage spaces in the UK, as your daily working premises.
GTW also offers paper shredding services, which are handy for making your way through filing cabinets of old documents.
5. Hobby items
Moving from work to play, many hobbies require a little more space than our homes can accommodate, especially when living in rented or student accommodation.
From musical instruments to photography and videography equipment to skiing, snowboarding, and even surfing gear, you might have much more than your home can accommodate, or your items may be shared with others.
If this is the case, self-storage provides the perfect solution that can be accessed by those who need it at any time.
While there are many things you can store, a few essential storage techniques can help you make the most of your storage space, particularly if you have a lot to store.
Working inward from the walls with larger items, ‘Russian Dolling’ smaller items within larger ones, and making the most of vertical space are important techniques for making your storage space go as far as possible.
What you can’t store
While we cover this in detail in a separate blog, here are a few examples of items that absolutely cannot be stored in self-storage.
- Livestock or pets? – Not only is this cruel, but it’s also very unhygienic; we’re a self-storage, not a private zoo!
- Milk, cheese or meat? – Perishable foods can lead to mould and bacteria, so none of these please.
- Flammable equipment? – In the interests of the safety of your items, other users’ items and, of course, the safety of our staff, flammable items of any kind are not advised.
- Radioactive material? – We don’t know where you found this, and we don’t want to know! Please keep it far away from our storage space (or anyone else, really).
- Toxic or harmful gas? – See answer above.
- Drugs and guns? – See answer above the above.
If you’re ever unsure about whether you can store your certain items or not, don’t be afraid to contact your desired storage company and ask!
We hope this list clarifies the benefits and features of self-storage. If you’d like to know more or receive a bespoke quote, visit our website or call us at 0141 221 4727.
